Red PSP Slim & Lite
There is some confusion at multiple levels about which version of the red PSP is actually the 'slim and lite' model. Various retailers are using the term for the lastest version (the red PSP 3000 Slim and Lite) whereas most people use the term to refer to the Red PSP 2000 series.
There is another area of confusion about the model naming for the red PSP Slim and Lite. This is because it is been commonly referred to as the red PSP Slim and Light, which is probably a more accurate use of English to describe the PSP rather than the marketing terminology using the term 'lite'.
If you search in google you will find around 12 million results for the phrase 'PSP Slim and Lite' versus approaching 2 million results for 'PSP Slim and Light'. This indicates that the incorrect term is now in common usage which is not exactly a victory for clear branding.
Red PSP Slim & Lite versus Red PSP Slim & Light
Various incremental improvements were also made to the Red PSP hardware such as repositioning of the d-pad controller in response to complaints about poor feedback when using it, the repositioning of the memory stick port as people were occassionally breaking them, and the introducion of charging via the USB port. Other seldom used features such as the infra-red port were removed in this version of the PSP.
The Red PSP Slim & Lite was an evolutionary release to the original Playstation Portable, coming about two and a half years after the first version hit the shops. Sony took into account feedback from users and the main changes are essentially reflected in the name of the new model, firstly it was thinner by about 20% ('slim') and lighter by about one third of its original weight('lite').
This did come at the price of a small sacrifice in terms of reduced battery life, which Sony subsequently attempted to remedy by the release of a more powerful battery pack (requiring a mod to the battery cover to cope with the size of the new battery pack).
In terms of improved functionality the red PSP Slim and Lite enabled the users to watch higher resolution videos via the UMD and the memory stick. More memory had been added to improve load times of videos and games.
